Our Eco-Logical Range

Our eco range currently includes 25 products with the same quality as national brands. They are 15–35% cheaper, and 18 of the 25 products are Ecolabel certified. For our Eco products, we selected the most environmentally friendly options available on the market. Our efforts are rewarded: since 2009, sales of our Eco range have increased by 40%, showing that our customers also care more about the environment. We also reduce the environmental impact of our other Delhaize products. For example, our liquid detergents are 100% concentrated but just as effective as standard detergents. We also replaced our entire range of incandescent bulbs with energy-saving bulbs.

Fairtrade for a More Equitable Global Trade

What is Fairtrade?
Fairtrade is an NGO connecting producers, industry, and consumers to promote a sustainable economy. If you see the Fairtrade label on a product, it comes from fair trade!

The label indicates that the product meets strict social and environmental criteria, including protection of natural resources and biodiversity, better working conditions, and prohibition of child labor. Farmers are guaranteed a fair price, allowing them to secure their future.

Fairtrade Principles

Fairtrade certified farmers are organized into cooperatives, enabling them to invest collectively and strengthen their negotiating position.

To ensure fair and sustainable income, Fairtrade has established strict trade conditions:

  • Minimum Price: Buyers sourcing from Fairtrade-certified cooperatives must pay a minimum price that covers production costs and acts as a safety net if market prices drop. If the market price is higher, producers receive the higher price.
  • Fairtrade Premium: Cooperatives receive a Fairtrade premium in addition to the raw material purchase price. Farmers decide democratically on the use of this premium, often for productivity, quality, or infrastructure improvements.
  • Social and Environmental Criteria: Farmers and cooperatives must meet strict requirements. Fairtrade is a sustainable production and development label, emphasizing ecological practices, labor rights, and democratic cooperative management.

Sustainable Fishing

Overfishing poses a real threat to fish populations worldwide: 60% of the global fish stock is seriously threatened. Delhaize is aware of this issue and develops a sustainable fishing policy in collaboration with ILVO.

Our ambition? Responsibly source our entire fish assortment—fresh, frozen, or canned. We focus on two aspects: avoid selling fish on ILVO’s red list and increase sales of green list products. Delhaize helps you consume sustainably with our assortment of fresh, frozen, and canned fish. Use this seasonal poster to buy wisely:

Did you know?

  • We no longer sell eel, swordfish, ray, or seabass as these species are endangered.
  • Our 100% sustainable fishing policy positions us as a market leader in Belgium.
  • You can also buy these products online at delhaize.be.

Socially Responsible Products

Sustainability is not only about the origin or production of your products. It is also important how suppliers treat their employees. To protect supplier employees, we established a Code of Conduct in 2009, setting work standards in line with the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Our Code of Conduct aligns with the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) Code, of which we are members. The BSCI addresses the following themes concretely:

  • Compliance with laws
  • Freedom of association and collective bargaining rights
  • Prohibition of discrimination
  • Compensation
  • Working hours
  • Health and safety at work
  • Prohibition of child labor
  • Prohibition of forced labor and disciplinary measures
  • Environmental and safety compliance
  • Management systems

Since 2014, the Code of Conduct has been systematically included in supplier contracts. Together with BSCI, Delhaize monitors and supports suppliers to improve working conditions. Our goal is to ensure good working conditions at all production sites by 2020.

Light Bulbs

All our private-label bulbs have been replaced with energy-saving and LED bulbs. They consume less energy, which benefits our planet. This complies with European regulations and is a step in the right direction.

Did you know that a traditional incandescent bulb loses 90% of its energy as heat—using only 10% for light, its primary purpose? Energy-saving bulbs use 4–5 times less energy and last up to ten times longer. LED bulbs use up to 8 times less energy and last twenty times longer. This also saves you money in the long run, despite higher upfront costs.

Did you know…

  • On average, an energy-saving bulb saves €7 and an LED bulb saves €10 on your energy bill?

Detergents

Your safety and environmental respect are priorities for Delhaize. That’s why we present the composition of Delhaize detergents.

Delhaize develops products with the optimal combination of components while strictly complying with legislation. This allows us to provide quality and benefits in a detergent.

For industrial secrecy reasons, we cannot disclose exact quantities of components. Lists present them in descending order of concentration, reflecting the latest formula, i.e., the products currently sold in our stores.
